## What Do the C and Stars Mean on NFL Jerseys? The Complete Guide to Captain Patches
If you’ve ever watched an NFL game and noticed a small **”C”** or a cluster of **stars** on a player’s jersey, you’re not alone. These subtle but powerful symbols carry real meaning. In this guide, we’ll break down exactly **what the C and stars mean on NFL jerseys**, how they’re earned, and why they matter.
### **The Letter “C”: Captain Designation**
The **”C” on an NFL jersey** stands for **Captain**. It’s a mark of leadership, voted on by teammates and coaches. But not all “C’s” look the same.
– **Gold C with Stars**: A player who has been a captain for **four or more seasons**.
– **White C with Stars**: A player who has been a captain for **three seasons**.
– **White C without Stars**: A first- or second-year captain.
These patches are typically worn on the **upper chest**, near the shoulder, and are color-matched to the team’s uniform.
### **What Do the Stars Represent?**
The **stars** inside or around the “C” represent **years of service as a captain**. Each star equals one full season of captaincy beyond the initial three years. So a player with **four stars** has been a captain for at least seven seasons—a rare honor.
Teams like the **Dallas Cowboys** and **New England Patriots** popularized the star-captain system, but today all 32 teams use similar patches.
### **Other Jersey Symbols You Might See**
– **Walter Payton Man of the Year**: A small football with a “W” or “P”.
– **Art Rooney Award**: A sportsmanship patch.
– **Super Bowl Logos**: Worn on the chest for championship games.
